Herald, herald, herald, you are number one. It’s just something that we’ll probably continue to try to address culturally and so I think the piece is just my own sort of artistic creative gesture of pointing towards that and saying this is the most basic human need and how is it going to evolve and how has it even evolved in a way that we’re not even presently aware of. I think it makes the broader point that we've always had that challenge and that we're carrying that challenge forward in new and never-before-experienced ways. ![]() Wayfinders does speak to the most basic need we have to connect with each other and that longing and a certain sense of missing some kind of connection that we imagine existed in the past before our connection became mediated by a certain abstraction that then translated in technology and moved forward. While it is slightly dystopic, I think there’s a very positive message in both pieces because they’re both asking the audience to reflect very personally on our current time and place and the ways in which the things that we’re very accustomed to use every day can actually bring us further apart. While we have more and more ways to connect and more and more ways to get to each other those methods, those technologies tend to be increasingly mediating our personal/physical autonomy to actually get to somebody, and modernity just allows us to be further apart, allows us to be more in touch over great distances. What Wayfinders has in common with the predecessor piece, Surfacing, is they both explore how progress can be a double-edged sword of connection and disconnection. It's a mainframe of mind-space formally known as the ethnosphere, which is the sum total of all ideas and cultures and languages of the Earth similar in a way that the biosphere is the sum total of all living organisms. So the setting of Wayfinders is a bit unusual. My particular interests lied in a very broad, conceptual question that I think we face every day, which is how we interface with technology more and more to mediate our relationship with people, places and things and I create interdisciplinary work that presents music as a theatrical endeavor because I am trying to really meld all of the elements I’m working with. TRANSCRIPTĪ lot of people (a lot of people) would see this (would see this) and they say (and they say) "Wow." In the 19th century the Romantic composers often asked for pizzicato. Monteverdi used it in his opera Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda. In orchestras composers used pizzicato in the 17th century. This is not the same as jazz bass players who slap the strings at the end of a note (“slap bass”). One special effect can be made by pulling the string hard and letting it go so that it snaps against the fingerboard. Double basses usually play pizzicato when playing with jazz groups. For example: in a waltz the cellos and violas might be accompanying the tune with an “um-cha-cha, um-cha-cha” while the double basses just pluck on the “um” (the first beat of the bar). Double basses often play pizzicato to give extra rhythmic and harmonic support. Pizzicato notes on the double bass sound much more resonant (big and boomy). The player can get different sounds by plucking in different parts of the string. Pizzicato notes sound short and detached (staccato). This is fine so long as the player has time to pick the bow up again when it goes back to arco. If there is a long pizzicato section then it is more comfortable to put the bow down instead of holding it in the right hand all the time. It can take a little more time to go back to bowing again because the player has to get the bow back into playing position. If the bowed note finishes near the tip the player needs a moment to get the hand ready to pluck. It is easy to play a bowed note and then immediately a plucked note if the bowed note finished near the heel of the bow (the end where the bow is held). ![]() Very often players have to change very quickly from bowing to plucking and back again. This is normally when they are deliberately imitating a guitar. Very occasionally violinists may be asked to pluck their instruments holding them down in their laps. Stopped strings are harder, and the brilliant violinist and composer Niccolò Paganini wrote some virtuoso pieces with extremely difficult left hand pizzicato. It is not difficult to pluck an open string with the left hand. It is also possible to play pizzicato with the left hand (the hand which is normally doing the fingering). ![]() Cellists and double bass players can use the thumb for plucking, especially for playing chords. Sometimes more fingers can be used for particularly fast pizzicato sections. Sometimes the player may rest the thumb on the edge of the fingerboard to keep the hand steady. Bassists typically use the index and middle finger. When instruments of the violin family are played pizzicato the player usually plucks the string with the index finger (pointing finger) of the right hand somewhere over the fingerboard. When the player has to play with the bow again the word “arco” is written in the music (“arco” is the Italian word for “bow”). Instruments such as the violin, viola, cello and double bass are normally played with a bow, but if the composer wants the player to pluck instead of bow, the word “pizzicato” or just “pizz” is written in the music. Pizzicato means: playing a string instrument by plucking the strings (pulling a string with the finger and letting go quickly). “At the end of an administration, there is a sense of trying to generate whatever value there is by handing out all plums that are available, you know, with great dispatch, which if you thought you were going to be around you wouldn't need that same sense of urgency,” Stier observed.ĪBC News’ Jon Garcia and Luis Martinez contributed to this report. The lame duck period has evolved since it began in early American history. Panetta pointed specifically to Trump confidants and campaign operatives David Bossie and Cory Lewandowski, who were appointed in early December to the Pentagon’s Defense Business Board after the White House removed the members serving on the board, which was formed in 2002 to provide senior Pentagon officials with “independent advice on business management issues,” according to its website.
